The State We're In

After moving abruptly back to the United States from living abroad, in 2021 my daughter and I decided to settle in Oregon. It had been 35 years since I had lived in the states, and it was her first time living in another country. After a year and a half of being in an apartment, we finally found a home and moved in.

These images are from a series made while exploring this new state. The process of getting back into American society and government was manageable but quite taxing, and in my free time I'd often walk the neighborhood to clear my head. Observations found in my wanderings would sometimes surprise me, pointing to anxieties that I wasn't previously aware of. This was counterbalanced bythe excitement of something new.

We've now been in our new home for nearly two years, and the walks have evolved into a more familiar exploration of our surroundings. These photographs try to convey that evolution of thought and emotion.
